Description
This beautiful purple ornamental grass is sterile, thus non-invasive. It is one of the main "chop and drop" grasses we grow on our farm because it is easy care, self-sufficient, attractive, and also provides fodder for grazing animals among its other uses. Dies back in freezes but comes back quickly. Great quick hedge in areas with mild or no freezes. Needs no extra nutrition or water. It grows rapidly, helps prevent erosion, can be used as a windbreak, acts as a pest trap plant for grain crops, increases soil fertility. Make paper or biochar with it too. This is one of our favorite useful permaculture plants. Easily propagates by division or stem cuttings. Does not grow well in waterlogged soil. Some people eat the young shoots, but as there is unclear information on this, we do not recommend it for human consumption. It grows 8-12' tall and bunches 3-5' wide.
