Katuk, Sauropus androgynus - Small, attractive bush - keep trimmed between 3-6 feet for best behavior. Variegated and green varieties. Can grow in part sun or shade, it is an understory plant in Borneo jungles. One of the few plants with vitamin K in the leaves. Tastes a little like peanuts, the leaf can be eaten raw or cooked like spinach. This plant can lower blood pressure, so use it lightly, in moderation. A delicacy is to use the tips like asparagus. Propagate by cuttings of wooden stems or seed, will often self propagate. Dies back in freezes but comes back the next year and reaches full height in one season. Prefers moisture and fertile soil (grows naturally in humid tropic rainforests).
